Gorilla trekking
Trekking mountain gorillas through the dense African forests is a magical experience. Only eight visitors are allowed per gorilla group each day, and to minimize possible transmission of human diseases, visitors are asked to maintain a distance of 10m from the gorillas. Typically, tracking can take from 3 to 8 hours and requires some agility and fitness; however, all fitness levels can be accommodated and no one should feel deterred from missing this once in a lifetime experience.
Golden monkey trekking
These playful primates are a sight to behold and can only be found in a few locations in East Africa. A unique and unforgettable experience that is not to be missed. Unlike the mountain gorillas, the golden monkeys are much more active and are constantly jumping from tree to tree. It’s an opportunity to see these rare and beautiful creatures up close and personal in their natural habitat.
Chimpanzee tracking
Start your walk in search of the resident chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest there are more than 500 chimps in the forest. If you are lucky enough to encounter them, you will spend a really enjoyable hour watching them leap from branches, build nests from leaves in the treetops, and play and groom each other. Nyungwe Forest is also home to a vast number of other animals and birds — there are 12 species of primate including black and white colobus monkeys, L'Hoest monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys, 120 species of butterfly, 278 species of bird, serval cats, side-striped jackal, giant forest hog and wild cat. Moramba Bay boat trip
The boat heads north up the coast which is deserted save one or two fishing villages and two private houses. The rest of the coastline is wild and untouched with beaches covered in ghost crabs, tiny coves with white sand, islands covered in lush vegetation and tall baobab trees and rocky outcrops where you may see the Madagascar fish eagle. You pass a couple of fishing villages and often see fishermen out in their dhows and pirogues. Stopping on some of the islands of Moramba Bay to view huge baobabs, see where old Sakalava tombs were located and learn about flora and fauna.
Andasibe National Park Night Walk
The walk takes place along the main road that runs along the edge of the reserve. The road makes for easy walking and the proximity to the vegetation will mean that you are likely to spot something. Dwarf lemurs, woolly lemurs and mouse lemurs are commonly spotted as well as different species of frogs, chameleons and lots of insects. The walk is easy, and a really nice way to spend an evening.
Whale watching
In June, humpback whales come from the waters of the South Pole to the Ste Marie Channel, not far off the coast. The channel is protected by the East coast of Madagascar and by Sainte-Marie, ideal for whales who come to breed and calve. The whales remain close to the Ste Marie for four months — the time taken for the calves to grow up. In September the whales return to the South Pole to stuff themselves with krill.
